Virginia Stage Company Produces Tony Award-Winning Musical: Fun Home

Virginia Stage Company takes a leap into a different realm to produce the Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home. Unlike the classics seen so far in their 40th anniversary season, Fun Home is a modern cutting-edge musical that premiered only five years ago.

This stunning production was the first Broadway musical to ever feature a lesbian protagonist—Alison Bechdel, the author of the autobiographical graphic novel on which the play is based.

The show features Broadway icon Kate Fahrner, who played Glenda in Wicked, and chronicles Alison’s life growing up in the family funeral home, coming out at Oberlin College and her present days penning and illustrating her award-winning comics.

The plot, which feels more like a play than a musical, is airtight and does not skip a beat during some of the most amazing music to hit the stage in decades. Instant classics like “Ring of Keys,” which is the story of the first crush Alison ever had on a delivery woman when she was a pre-teen, and “Changing My Major” about her first time with a woman, make audiences laugh, cry and somehow do both at the same time.

In support of the LGBTQ community in Eastern Virginia, Virginia Stage is hosting an exhibit of artwork produced by the LGBT Life Center during the run of Fun Home. The “My Family” series are portraits of families that come in all shapes and sizes, and shows that it is not who you love, but that you love, that matters. Virginia Stage is also hosting LGBT NightOut with OutWire757, HRBOR and the LGBT Life Center. This event will be the opening of the “My Family” display in the Wells Theatre and will feature OutWire757’s spoken word storytelling series following the performance.

If you are anywhere near Norfolk, this is a show you will not want to miss!

Fun Home will run from January 23rd through February 10th. For more information and tickets, visit: http://www.vastage.org/funhome.
