Cardio refers to exercises that get the heart rate up for an extended period of time. The heart is a muscle and getting it pumping is the best way to exercise it to keep it strong and doing its job.
Of course cardio helps boost the metabolism and contribute to weight-loss. It is also worth noting that doing cardio exercises strengthens your heart, lungs and helps to burn calories.
Performing cardio increases blood circulation and provides the body with more energy. The body functions more efficiently this way and is better at fighting off illnesses like heart disease.
Cardio also helps with brain function. Research finds that those that participate in cardio regularly see improvements in memory. This is because more oxygen is enriching the blood that goes to the brain. This also produces endorphins that help fight depression. And as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy!”
Having a healthy heart is important to having a healthy body. Many believe that there is only one way to exercise to get cardio, but medical professionals say that there are many different types of cardio. “The misconception is that you have to do 30 or 40 minutes of traditional cardio exercise. I don’t think you do. You can do weight training or a boot camp or interval training and get just as many benefits from that as if you went for a long walk or run,” states Dr. Michael Bracko in a Best Health interview. So the next time you go to exercise or even if you’re deciding to take a nice stroll, remember all the benefits that cardio has to offer.
